an excellent job and is grateful for her service. yes, john. >> jay, this investigation has been going on for months. how is it that the white house didn't have any idea of this until the day after the election, and then congress a few days later? >> i would prefer you to the fbi. they have -- as i understand it protocols in place for when they notify the legislative and executive branches of investigations. and, you know, it is simply a fact that the white house was not aware of the situation regarding general petraeus until wednesday, and the situation regarding general allen until friday. so, you know, the fbi is the place to go in terms of an explanation of the protocols they follow. but i understand that that is the answer that they will give, that there are protocols they follow, that govern how they inform the various branches of government of these kinds of investigations. >> do you understand how people would think this is utterly bizarre, i mean the day after the election, and the anger you're hearing on capitol hill that they didn't know this was going on, at least the timin

heard this, said the president has to know this? >> well, i think john raised this issue. as it comes up, the chain of command and the fbi, the fbi embarked into the inquiry of the cia director. if i were the director, i would properly go to the person i work for and that's the attorney general holder and give him an idea what's going on. and then the question is, would holder have gone to his boss and commander in chief. it's hard for me to imagine that chain just stopping with something as sensational as an ongoing investigation of david petraeus cia director just stopping. and so i think the question whether it was some inkling that the whitehouse, through a formal channel, informal channel before the election that people just kind of sat on and then it went in a more formal chain of command way, they acted instantly once he heard about it. was there something before then, as john said a minute ago, in this full scale investigation that will be a key question. >> i agree about why it didn't make its way up the chain of command. however, in some of these cases there are people inside t

the commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan, the general john allen who took over the job when general petraeus left it to run the c.i.a. now officials say general allen's nomination to become the supreme allied commander in europe is on "hold" while potentially inappropriate e-mails are being checked out, and her name is jill kelley, a friend of the petraeus family and triggered the original f.b.i. investigation that revealed the director was cheating on his wife. she contacted an at she knew, shirtless agent, claiming to have received anonymous threatening e-mails tells her to stay away from general petraeus. it is unclear but the f.b.i. found reason to open an investigation. investigators determined that the e-mails were from general's biographer paula broad wall and she and general petraeus had an fair and neither had done anything criminal but reason that are inexplicable at this moment, there is more after thousands and thousands of e-mails were discovered thousands and thousands of e-mails. and general allen is also married, and he defies there was an affair and denies that there was any
